A Qualified Person is required to oversee all excavations and trenching job sites and identify potential dangers as it relates to MIOSHA Part 9 (OSHA’s Subpart P) - Trenching and Excavation Standard. They are charged with enforcing the regulated best practices for the excavation project. This includes knowing the dynamics of soil pressure, how to classify soil conditions, and how to properly slope a trench or use an appropriate trench safety devise such as a trench box or hydraulic shoring.
"A trained workforce is able to take effective preventive action to avoid hazardous situations instead of having to react in vain to fatal accidents," says Mike Ross, MIOSHA Qualified Outreach Safety Trainer. "Underground utility workers, municipal and private contractors, project supervisors, operators, owners, safety directors, and engineers; they all must be informed of the potential dangers of soil pressure and the dynamics of trenches. Owners can reduce Workers’ Compensation claims, avoid fines, and prevent wrongful death lawsuits by educating workers to recognize and manage unsafe excavation conditions," Ross explains.
Qualified Person training includes Best-Practice Product Application Training. Participants learn in-the-classroom and in-the-ground, having an opportunity to work with:
- Steel Trench Shields,
- Hydraulic Vertical Shores,
- Lightweight Aluminum Shields, and
- Build-A-Box™ Modular Aluminum Trench Shield System.
To register for a Qualified Person training course, including Municipality Day; please call 800-552-8800 at least two days in advance, or download a fax registration form. The cost is $50 per person and lunch is provided for all registered participants.
